An American manufacturing company, Westinghouse, has announced the development of the Westinghouse AP small modular reactor , which they say is the most advanced, proven and easily deployable SMR solution.
The new reactor is based on the company's flagship AP reactor. The AP advanced reactor is already proving its worth around the world. Currently, four units using AP technology in China are setting performance records, while another six are under construction. One AP reactor is operating at Plant Vogtle in Georgia, while a second is nearing completion.
The AP SMR is an ultra-compact unit of modular construction that leverages the innovation and operational know-how of the global AP fleet. It will use identical AP technology to include major equipment, structural components, passive safety, proven fuel and I&C systems.
The company's advanced passive safety system automatically achieves safe shutdown without operator action and eliminates the need for backup power supply and cooling. This also directl C Level Executive List y translates to a simplified design and smaller footprints. Like the AP, the AP is designed to operate over a life cycle of more than years.
The new reactor will generate about a third of the power of the flagship AP reactor. It will generate approximately MW of power, compared to the AP's , megawatts, and will power approximately , homes.
The AP SMR offers reliable, safe and clean electricity and additional applications for district heating and water desalination . Its fast charge tracking capabilities make it ideal for integration with renewable resources. It will also pave the way towards the hydrogen economy by enabling clean and cost-effective hydrogen production integrated with the plant.
The Small Modular Reactor aims to be available in , followed by site-specific licensing and construction on the first unit towards the end of the decade. Installing each plant is expected to cost about $ billion, a small fraction of the expense of the full AP
“The AP is the only small modular reactor offering available that is based on advanced, operational and deployed reactor technology,” said Patrick Fragman, president and CEO of Westinghouse. “The launch of the AP SMR completes Westinghouse’s reactor technology portfolio, allowing us to meet all of our customers’ needs globally, with a clear line of sight on delivery schedule and economics.
